If I Only Had 10 Rules...

Following up on last week's first five rules to collecting art, here are my last five.  I plan to check in annually and see if these still hold true, but I believe they will be the most enduring advice I could give on collecting art.

Top: A detail from Amoako Boafo's "Joy in Purple" which recently sold for $668,000 against an estimate of $30-50K
Left: Lee Krasner's Re-Echo sold for $9M against an estimate of $4-6M as a part of the Ginny Williams Collection
Right: Lynda Benglis' "Little Pinch" is a part of the collection of Dorothy and Herbert Vogel currently on loan to MOCA, LA

The Next 5 Rules To Collecting

6. Go Big or Go Home: Owning one really valuable artwork will open a lot more doors for you than a handful of works not worth very much.

7. Get Involved: Collectors make and improve upon the market for the artists they champion much more than it is perceived by outsiders.  Consider yourself a promoter for all works by an artist you collect-it will improve their overall market and the value of your own collection.

8. Focus: You are much more likely to make good financial decisions around art over time if you focus and specialize in an artistic movement or a finite number of artists.

9. Know When to Pull The Trigger: As I would advise in most decisions, use 85% your head and 15% your heart to decide whether or not to buy an artwork.  Do all of the research to understand the market value, but at the end of the day, buy it if you love it and don’t look back.

10. What is art truly worth?  Whatever someone is willing to pay for it.
