Art vs Experiences

Several years ago with the rise of the Museum of Ice Cream and the Color Factory, I reflected on the rise of the "real" versus experiential art movement.  I consider this a particularly salient topic for a pandemic, when the opportunity to experience viewing art is being completely reimagined.

Are Art Experiences the Disneyfication of the Art World?

Clearly technology's role in the creation of art is unquestionable, even as the art world moves ever slowly towards adopting technological tools for conducting business.
  • The recent announcement from Pace Gallery that they are creating a new entity to handle representation of their experiential artists, entitled Superblue, allows for them to separate the business of selling works by artists creating physical artworks from immersive art experiences that they can sell tickets for and run much more like an entertainment production company.  Their first space is set to open in Miami later this year.
  • This announcement on the heels of Hauser & Wirth's technology initiative ArtLab, the trend continues for the mega-galleries embracing a new way to monetize and market artist's adoption of technology.
  • The French company Culturespaces creates immersive art installations, such as the van Gogh installation pictured above, and manage art and cultural spaces in France.  They claim to receive more than a million visitors a year.
  • The ultimate reason to embrace experiential art for museums is to increase visitors.  The Asian Art Museum in San Francisco spent millions on a teamLab installation for the opening of their new pavilion in the hopes of garnering millennial techies to visit.  We will have to wait until the pandemic ends to see if this is a gamble worth taking.

Artsy Baby Gifts

As a new parent (we have a six-month old, she only knows life as shelter-in-place!) its been so fun to receive art related gifts over the past few months that I decided to put together a list of my favorites.  I will continue to add to it over time, but hope you find this useful for the little artist in your life.
